SLPA 600 Support Systems and Professional Issues in Speech-Language Pathology (3 Units)
Prerequisite: Admission to the graduate program in speech-language pathology. This course is designed for students in Speech-language pathology to enhance abilities to interact, interview, and provide educational information in order to create a support system and safe environment for persons with communication disabilities and their families. Students will actively participate in establishing and monitoring their own communication and counseling skills in order to become more attentive on how to counsel families and individuals. Also, students will be provided ethical, moral, and legal issues in the profession of Speech-Language Pathology. Information about collaboration, private practice, competency, preferred practice and professional standards, licensure and certification, marketing, risk management, telepractice, social media/social networking, and dual relationships are presented. Telepractice is a rapidly expanding clinical service delivery models in healthcare to online models such as direct, interactive services (synchronous), store-and-forward (asynchronous), and mobile health models. This course is designed to prepare graduate students, especially in speech and hearing healthcare professions, to successfully define, design, and deliver Telepractice services to their patients.
SLPA 663 Facilitating Auditory Learning & Spoken Language for Children with Hearing Loss Through Telepractice (3 Units)
Prerequisite: Full admission to the graduate SLP, graduate distance SLP, or graduate AUD program or permission of the school director. Comprehensive early intervention programs have created new opportunities for infants and toddlers with hearing loss to learn to listen and talk. In this course, students will learn the developmental processes underpinning audition and spoken language acquisition, and clinical techniques, strategies, and teaching approaches, including teletherapy, that speech and hearing professionals use to deliver services to young children who are deaf or hard of hearing in helping them to develop listening and spoken language.
