The Professional Firefighter Academy will give you the training you need to begin your career as an emergency service professional. Students receive training from some of the top fire instructors in the state, and they learn how to perform in the safest, most efficient, and most effective ways possible while working at an emergency scene. Finally, upon successful completion of the academy and receiving Ohio certification as a Firefighter II, our students earn college credit toward a fire-protection technology associate degree.
The Firefighter Academy courses meet current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standard Professional Firefighter Professional Qualifications and includes 16 Hours of Drivers Training.
Requirements for Admission
Admission to the University of Akron with a declared major or certificate offered by the College of Health and Human Sciences and Admission into the University of Akron Fire Academy.
You must meet the following prerequisites for enrollment:
- Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License.
- Physical exam is required.
- State and federal background checks are required.
- Have not been convicted of, plead guilty to, or had a judicial finding of guilt or are currently under indictment for any of the following:
- a felony;
- misdemeanor other than a minor traffic violation;
- a violation of any federal, state, county or municipal narcotics law;
- any act committed in another state, that, if committed in Ohio, would constitute a violation set forth in 4765-11-03 (16) (b) of the Ohio Administrative Code.
- Have not been adjudicated mentally incompetent by a court of law.
- Do not currently engage in the illegal use of controlled substances, alcohol, or other habit-forming drugs or chemical substances.
- Have not ever been convicted of, plead guilty to, or had a judicial finding of guilt for fraud or material deception in applying for, or obtaining a certificate, issued under Chapter 4765-11 or the Ohio Administrative Code.

The following information has official approval of The School of Disaster Sciences and Emergency Services and The College of Health and Human Sciences, but is intended only as a guide. Completion of this minor is contingent upon many factors, including but not limited to: class availability, total number of required credits, work schedule, finances, family, course drops/withdrawals, successfully passing courses, prerequisites, among others.
The following courses constitute a “Certificate from The Univerisy of Akron Fire Academy” and must be completed with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 over-all for the certificate to be noted on the student’s record. The granting of this certificate does not require completion of a degree.
