The University of Akron/Summit County Sheriff’s Office OPOTA Certified Training Academy  academy will provide thorough and comprehensive training to develop policing skills, enhance leadership abilities, and promote a solid ethical foundation to all cadets. The program provides over 711 hours of basic training and prepares each cadet to pass the Ohio State Peace Officer’s Certification Exam.

Also, throughout the entire training, core values of professionalism, obligation, leadership, integrity, courage, and excellence are stressed and reinforced. When the cadets complete the academy, they will enter the world of policing with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively perform their duties as law enforcement officials.

Requirements for Admission

Admission to the University of Akron with a declared major or certificate offered by the College of Health and Human Sciences and Admission into the University of OPATA/ University of Akron Police Academy.

2. State and Federal Background check is required

3. Negative Drug Screen is required

4 . Physical Exam is required

5. Physical Fitness Test is required

The following information has official approval of The School of Disaster Sciences and Emergency Services and The College of Health and Human Sciences, but is intended only as a guide. Completion of this minor is contingent upon many factors, including but not limited to: class availability, total number of required credits, work schedule, finances, family, course drops/withdrawals, successfully passing courses, prerequisites, among others.

The following courses constitute a “Certificate from The Univerisy of Akron Police Academy” and must be completed with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 over-all for the certificate to be noted on the student’s record. The granting of this certificate does not require completion of a degree.
