NURS 100 Introduction to Nursing (1 Unit)
Introduces students to influences of past, present, and future political, legal, social, and cultural processes on the nursing profession and the roles of nurses. (Formerly 8200:100)
NURS 101 Foundations of Nursing (5 Units)
Prerequisite: Admission to the Applied Science in Nursing Program. The focus of this 15-week course is to develop basic knowledge and skills of nursing care of adults. This foundation of nursing course will assist students in the integration of theory and practice as they begin to learn about nursing and the transition into the role of the professional nurse. This course introduces the application of the core organizing concepts within the QSEN framework. Topics include nursing process, nurse-client relationships, communication, psychomotor skills, nursing judgment, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. A concept-based curriculum with selected nursing concepts will be followed.
NURS 102 Health Assessment (2 Units)
Prerequisite: Admission to the Applied Science in Nursing Program. This course provides the students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform a basic comprehensive health assessment utilizing the skills of history taking, inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation. Normal assessment findings, frequently seen variations from normal and cultural differences are discussed. This course uses the core organizing concepts within the QSEN framework. A concept-based curriculum with selected nursing concepts will be followed.
NURS 103 Nursing Pharmacology (2 Units)
Prerequisite: Admission to the Applied Science in Nursing Program. This course will examine principles of pharmacotherapeutic agents used in the treatment of illness and promotion of wellness in diverse individuals across the lifespan. Emphasis is on fundamental concepts of pharmacology applied to major drug classes, actions, and effects. The focus is on commonly prescribed medications in terms of their mechanism of action, therapeutic use, and side and adverse effects. Students will learn all delivery systems of medications including oral and parenteral. Dosage calculation of medication is included in the course content. This course uses the core organizing concepts within the QSEN framework. A concept-based curriculum with selected nursing concepts will be followed.
NURS 104 Acute Adult Nursing (7 Units)
Prerequisites: NURS 101, NURS 102, NURS 103, BIOL 202, and BIOL 203. This course focuses on the care of adults in acute care settings, continuing to build on the selected core concepts within the QSEN and clinical judgment frameworks. The focus is on the acute physiological health problems commonly found in the adult population including ENT, cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, genital/urinary, hematological, endocrine, immunological, and musculoskeletal. A concept-based curriculum with selected nursing concepts will be followed.
NURS 205 Chronic Adult Nursing (6 Units)
Prerequisites: PSYC 230, BIOL 130, and NURS 104. The student will continue to build on previously acquired knowledge of selected core organizing concepts within the QSEN and clinical judgment frameworks, nursing skills and development of nursing judgement in the care of the adult with chronic health problems commonly found including ENT, cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, genital/urinary, hematological, endocrine, immunological, and musculoskeletal. Principles of older adult nursing will be included with each system. A concept-based curriculum with selected nursing concepts will be followed. Nursing care of the adult with chronic health conditions who are in a variety of settings will be included in the course.
NURS 206 Maternal/Newborn Nursing (2 Units)
Prerequisites: PSYC 230, BIOL 130, and NURS 104. The focus of this 5-week course is the nursing care of the childbearing family. Nursing care of the mother, newborn and family during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods will be emphasized. This course uses the core organizing concepts within the QSEN and clinical judgment framework. A concept-based curriculum with selected nursing concepts will be followed.
NURS 207 Pediatrics (2 Units)
Prerequisites: PSYC 230, BIOL 130, and NURS 104. The focus of this 5-week course is the nursing care of children from infants to adolescents and their families during health and illness. Growth and development of children will be emphasized. This course uses the core organizing concepts within the QSEN and clinical judgment framework. A concept-based curriculum with selected nursing concepts will be followed.
NURS 208 Mental Health Nursing (2 Units)
Prerequisites: PSYC 230, BIOL 130, and NURS 104. This 5-week course focuses on concepts associated with forming and maintaining therapeutic relationships with individuals who have mental health needs. This course uses the core organizing concepts within the QSEN and clinical judgment framework. A concept based curriculum with selected nursing concepts will be followed.
NURS 209 Complex/Critical Care in Nursing (5 Units)
Pre/Corequisites: NURS 205 and STAT 250. This 15-week course focuses on high acuity patient care in various critical care or complex settings. Knowledge and clinical competency skills will be built while advancing clinical judgment and synthesis of complex patient issues. This course uses the core organizing concepts within the QSEN framework. A concept-based curriculum with selected nursing concepts will be followed.
NURS 210 Leadership in Nursing (2 Units)
Prerequisites: NURS 205, NURS 206, NURS 207, and NURS 208. Pre/Corequisite: STAT 250. This 8-week course focuses on the application of leadership and management in the clinical setting. Political, social, cultural, legal and ethical issues are explored. Program review and prep testing for NCLEX will occur at the beginning and end of course. This course uses the core organizing concepts within the QSEN and clinical judgment frameworks. A concept-based curriculum with selected nursing concepts will be followed.
NURS 211 Foundations of Nursing Practice I (5 Units)
Prerequisites: Admission to the School of Nursing and NURS 100. This course focuses on basic concepts and skills needed by novice nursing students in order to care for clients. This course will focus on nurse-client relationships, communication, nursing process, psychomotor skills, and beginning pharmacology. Clinical experiences will reflect these concepts and skills. NURS 212 Foundations of Nursng Practice II (5 Units)
Prerequisite: NURS 211. Builds on Foundations of Nursing Practice I focusing on promoting holistic well being across the lifespan. Clinicals are with children and adults, acute and non-acute settings. (Formerly 8200:212)
NURS 216 Transition to Baccalaureate Nursing (3 Units)
Prerequisite: Admission to School of Nursing. This course emphasizes the transition from Licensed Practical Nurse to professional nurse. The LPN is introduced to the discipline of nursing from the baccalaureate perspective. (Formerly 8200:216)
NURS 217 Pathophysiology for Nurses (3 Units)
Prerequisite: Admission to the School of Nursing and NURS 100, or consent from department. Develop understanding of basic concepts related to pathophysiologic mechanisms of health, illness as applied to nursing. Emphasis on application to nursing using the nursing process. (Formerly 8200:217)
